Lonely Planet, not only travel guides anymore

December 8th, 2005 by Jorge

For a while now, the Lonely Planet editorial has been losing the label of “travel guides only” and has expanded its variety of titles in a very interesting manner. It still focuses in the travel market and tourism, but in a way other editorials haven’t explored yet. An example of this attempt is Pictorials, its collection of photos booksm whic already has many titles. While for now the list has a sort of “United Colors of Bennetton” theme -you know, that “we’re all equal” thing and make more marketing than politics from it- there are some titles that I’d really like to add to my library. For example, The Travel Book, a compilation of photos from everywhere in earth -at least that’s what they say. At Amazon it sells for something around US$26. The other one is Signspotting, a collection of road signs, that sells for a little under US$8. I have no idea if this collection is distributed in the devaluated argentinean land, but I’ll check at the largest book stores.

To Pictorials we should add other collections such as Travel Literature, puzzles, backpacks specially designed to carry Lonely Planet guides, CDs, calendars, DVDs and manuals. So much diversity really impresses me.
